For the third consecutive year, IICA has collaborated with partners such as CAS and the Ministries of Agriculture of the Americas to bring the voice of agriculture and climate solutions to the annual COP conferences.
BAKU, Azerbaijan November 20, 2024 (IICA) – Committed to fighting climate change, the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) and Carbon Asset Solutions (CAS) are “leading by example” by working together to offset their travel to Baku, Azerbaijan, while participating in the United Nations Conference of the Parties on Climate Change, or COP29.
For the third consecutive year, IICA has collaborated with partners such as CAS and the Ministries of Agriculture of the Americas to bring the voice of agriculture and climate solutions to the annual COP conferences.
In fact, the Casa de la Agricultura Sostenible de las Américas pavilion, installed at the COPs, is a hub for advancing the dialogue and actions needed to achieve a climate-safe world.
With CAS support, the carbon footprint of IICA’s travel to COP29 will be close to zero, thanks to the carbon credits generated by CAS offsets for soil carbon sequestration.
The credits provided to IICA originate from farmland in Alberta, Canada, and have been generated through a combined on-farm effort to both reduce GHG emissions and store additional carbon in the soil through the active adoption of regenerative agricultural practices.
“We always say that we conceive and see IICA as a bridging institution, connecting countries, regions, actors and solutions. This is an example of a concrete partnership to continue positioning agriculture as a sector that offers alternatives and solutions for a world in crisis,” commented Manuel Otero, Director General of IICA, on the partnership with CAS.
CAS is a technology platform in the carbon credit and impact investment sectors. It is a world leader in the nature-based carbon offset investment market, with the world’s most accurate soil scanning, with the strategic objective of being the new global standard for soil carbon measurement and verification.
CAS manages a carbon credit registry in which other parties can also participate. “Carbon Asset Solutions’ mission is to transform agriculture into a climate solution. When fully verified, it will demonstrate that every farm and livestock operation enrolled in the CAS program removes more carbon dioxide from the atmosphere than is emitted to grow their commodities – they are contributing to solving the climate problem,” said Rob Woodward, CAS delegate to COP29.
IICA is the specialized agricultural agency of the Inter-American System that supports the efforts of its 34 Member States to achieve agricultural development and rural well-being.
It is also a bridging institution across the Americas to raise the ambition for sustainable and productive agriculture, rural development and well-being, and serves as the voice of farmers, science-based policy and ministries to achieve food security and prosperity.
IICA is also a certified carbon neutral institution, the first international institution of its kind to receive this status in Costa Rica.
